——Next week, UN Secretary General Ban Ki moon, world leaders will participate in a grand event to attend the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Will the meeting be successful? I think the answer is yes. Admittedly, the negotiations have been protracted. Until now, differences still outweigh consensus on the details of the so-called "outcome document" to be released. However, this is not the ultimate measure. Far more important is the outcome already achieved at the Rio Conference, namely, the launching of a global movement for change. The "Rio+20" conference is a milestone on a long road. Twenty years ago, the 1992 Earth Summit placed sustainable development on the global agenda. Today, we have a broader and more nuanced understanding of sustainable development. In Rio, more than 100 heads of State and Government will work with some 25000 participants to chart the way forward. For a long time, we have achieved prosperity through consumption. This model has died. In Rio, we must create a new model - the 21st century economic model - and abandon the myth of zero sum trade-offs between development and the environment. We are increasingly realizing that with intelligent public policies, governments can respect the limited natural resources of the planet while developing their economies, reducing poverty, creating decent employment opportunities, and accelerating social progress. In this sense, I believe that the momentum of change is irreversible. Examples of this can be found everywhere in large and small countries, rich countries, and poor countries. Many countries, such as Barbados, Cambodia, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, and South Africa, are adopting "green growth" strategies to use limited natural resources more efficiently, create employment opportunities, and promote low-carbon development. Many industries in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Kenya, Jordan, Malaysia, Mexico, Nepal, Senegal, and Ukraine, including agriculture and tourism, are adopting new green growth technologies. China has committed to meeting 16% of its energy needs through renewable energy by 2020, and plans to increase investment by $450 billion in waste recovery and clean technology in its current five-year plan. In Brazil, more than 500000 people are employed in the field of waste management and recycling, most of whom live on the margins of society. In promoting this transformation, governments and nation states are not isolated. In Rio, more than 1000 business leaders from all continents will send a common message: Business as usual will be a dead end. Many enterprises have realized that the responsibility of enterprises in the 21st century is sustainability. Nike has launched a new program called "Facing the Challenge" to help protect Brazil's forest ecosystem. Unilever is committed to achieving 100% sustainable raw materials by 2020. Meanwhile, Microsoft announced that it will soon achieve carbon free emissions. The energy efficiency of non electric air conditioners produced by China's Yuanda Group has increased by more than 200% and is currently expanding to other energy-saving products and sustainable buildings. Energy will be a major focus of the Rio Conference. I call it the "Golden Line", which connects all points and creates a sustainable future. This is a key driving force for development, social inclusion, and environmental protection, including adaptation to climate change. To this end, I established the new initiative "Sustainable Energy for All" in 2011. "Sustainable energy for all" is the future partnership model. Its principle is simple and effective: the United Nations, through its unparalleled appeal, brings together all relevant parties and works together for the common good. This is the lowest goal that "Rio+20" can achieve. Of course, the negotiations themselves are very important. The agreements that can be implemented in writing today will form the basis for discussions tomorrow. Not only that, "Rio+20" also demonstrated a strong global movement for change - a major step towards the desired future.
